You are in West Los Angeles, the afternoons are getting hot, and you want a number for a new central air conditioner. The honest answer is that central AC installation cost depends on your house, not on a price list. A Rancho Park traditional, a Palms duplex and a Century City condo each need a different job. This page shows what goes into the quote so you can read one with confidence.
What a central AC install includes
A real install is more than a box on a pad. Here is what the work covers.
- A room-by-room load calculation to size the system.
- The outdoor condenser, set on a pad or bracket in a spot that fits the lot.
- The indoor coil and air handler or furnace match.
- Refrigerant lines, drain line, wiring and a thermostat.
- Any return or duct changes found in the survey.
- The mechanical permit and final inspection.
- Startup, testing and a walk-through with you.
Ask any contractor to list these items. If a quote is one line with a total, you cannot compare it to another.
What sets the price
These are the things that move the number, roughly in order of impact.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Home size and heat gain | Bigger, sunnier houses need more capacity. |
| Equipment tier | Single stage, two stage and variable speed differ in cost and comfort. |
| Ductwork condition | Sound ducts cost little. Undersized or leaky ducts add work. |
| Electrical | A tight panel or old disconnect adds scope. |
| Condenser location | Roof, side yard or tight lot changes labor and line length. |
| Permit and testing | Required on a replacement and part of the job. |
| Refrigerant type | New systems use A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. |
We do not print a flat number here, because any flat number would be wrong for most houses. What we do is write the quote after the survey, itemized, so you can see where each dollar goes.
Adding AC to a house with ducts for heat only
Many West LA homes have a furnace and ducts that were built for heat. They never had cooling. Adding AC is possible, but the ducts decide how smooth it goes.
Heating ducts are often small, because heat needs less airflow than cooling does. A new condenser pushes more air, and small ducts get loud and weak. So we measure before we promise anything.
- If the ducts are close, a new coil and a few changes may be enough.
- If the ducts are too small or leaky, partial or full replacement belongs in the quote.
- If ducts are not practical, a ductless mini split can cool the rooms that matter without touching the walls.
See our ductwork services page if your ducts are the open question.
Permits
Replacing an AC or ductwork in California is permitted work. In West Los Angeles the permit comes from LADBS, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. We pull the mechanical permit and handle the final inspection on every replacement.
Title 24 Part 6, California's Building Energy Efficiency Standard, can also apply. Depending on the scope, it can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test, verified by a third-party HERS rater who is not the installer. That work is part of the job, not a surprise at the end. We plan it from the start.
Electric service for most of West LA comes from LADWP. Gas for a furnace comes from SoCalGas.
Quote
Here is how we write a quote.
- We visit the home and measure.
- We run the load calculation on paper.
- We write up options side by side, so you can compare tiers.
- You get the quote in writing before any work starts.
You can also read about the equipment on our AC installation page. If you only need a repair first, say so. Repair calls are welcome too.
FAQ
Why can't you give me a price over the phone?
Because the same system costs different amounts in different houses. Ducts, panel, unit location and permit scope all change the total. A short survey gets you a real number.
Is a bigger AC better?
No. An oversized unit cools fast, shuts off, and leaves humidity behind. Correct sizing comes from the load calculation, not from guessing.
Do I need new ducts with a new AC?
Not always. If your ducts are sealed and sized right, they stay. If they are not, we price the fix into the quote.
Does a replacement need a permit?
Yes. It is permitted work in California, and LADBS issues it for West LA neighborhoods.
Can I get quotes for more than one system type?
Yes. We write central AC, heat pump and ductless options side by side so you can compare.
What does SEER2 mean?
It is the current federal efficiency rating, based on a test procedure that changed on 1 Jan 2023. We show the rating for each option in your quote.
